South East Tasmania -
holiday accommodation,activities,attractions.

South east Tasmania is a wonderful place. You can snorkell in the seaweed forests of Freycinet and sit atop Schouten Island. Maria Island is a special place. The coast from Freycinet to Rescherche Bay is considered the best cruising grounds in Australia by experienced yaghties with good reason. Fishermen love it too. The locals enjoy scallops, abalone, crays and scalefish straight from the sea.

Walking is a treat , from one end to the other, from fantastically high seacliff edges to button grass plains, from high country to pristine beaches. The locals love surfing, kite surfing, tow surfing(any kind really), kayaking and rockclimbing. There are local public golf clubs and tennis courts available. There is plenty of wild life to be found too. Adventure tours operate on whale watch, we all get excited while observing wedgetailed eagles, black cockies, all manner of coastal birds and especially the swift parrot in the Wielangta forest. Dusk and dawn bring out mobs of marsupials so be careful driving at these times!
The Falls music festival kicks off the Tasmanian new year at Marion Bay. The craft galleries and cafes
of Hobart and Salamanca Market are the retail centres but there are many small galleries, studio outlets and good coffee throughout the south east Tasmania region.
From Marion Bay the whole of the Tasman Peninsular, Tasman National Park, Hobart and indeed the whole of south east Tasmania is accessable in a day trip.

The peak tourist season in south east Tasmania really begins around new year with the Hobart Summer
Festival and the Sydney - Hobart yachts but whatever the time of year in south east Tasmania outside activities are always available to you. You can visit the world class Tasmanian Devil Park where you can get up close to the tasmanian devils and other wildlife. The Long Spit Nature Reserve at Marion Bay is the summer holiday destination of choice for many migratory birds - some of them fly 2000kms just to get here! The beaches and coastline face all points on the compass so there is always a protected corner to picnic.

Port Arthur, Tasman Peninsular and Forestier Peninsular thru Copping to Richmond and Hobart is all convict country, local Tasmanian aborigines knew all about the mild micro
climate and where to pick up an abalone. In fact the area’s aboriginal history, maritime history, our history as a penal colony, and the early exploitations in forestry and whaling are fascinating. Just check out the vegies at the Bream Creek Show in March to experience the rural flavour.

Don't worry about the weather, expect 4 seasons in one day! Bring your favourite warm jacket and a beanie for winter, sunnies and plenty of sunscreen for summer.
